When We Cry Tears Are Prayers…

I am a firm believer that there’s power in our tears.

I really struggle with feelings of overwhelmed sadness and frustration when it comes to school shootings. Since hearing about the recent school shooting on February 14th in Florida my heart has been a mess. As a mommy to 4 children, 3 of which are school aged my mind constantly seems to go to the “what if” questions especially in light of such tragedies. I know that I’m not alone there’s many others out there that are hurting because of these senseless acts of violence. When we cry tears are prayers…

Honestly I don’t understand why things like this happen. It makes me sad. I know that I am not alone with my emotions and my questions. To say that I feel completely overwhelmed would be a bit of an understatement. Since when has sending our kids off to school become such a scary thing? We need God more today than ever.

School Shootings, Gun Laws and Mental Health

This is a hard topic for me. Honestly, I was reluctant to write a post on my blog about school shootings. I had the realization that we are all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. of school aged children. I know for a fact that I am not alone in the thought process that my children are my entire world. Also, the safety of our children is of utmost importance to each of us.

Is there a solution to all this madness? I haven’t a clue. Several questions and concerns are floating around, is it more gun laws we need or more mental health outreach in our schools? Perhaps its a little of both. I’m not here to debate that.


When We Cry: Tears are prayers too

I don’t have any answers

In fact, I have no way to solve this problem. I am writing this blog post because I want you to know, if you are reading this, this subject matters and I stand with you. My prayers are for our children, our children’s teachers and the rest of the school faculty for both their safety, protection and peace within our schools.

Have you ever been so overwhelmed that you simply cannot pray? When your head and your heart hurt so bad that the only reaction that you may have is tears? It’s because we care that we cry. Tears are believed to be prayers that are sent directly to God when we don’t have the words to speak.

It’s hard to feel helpless

It’s extremely hard to pray and sometimes its especially hard to trust God… especially with our most prized possessions, our children. Believe me I know that even the thought of going to God about things like this is tricky because our emotions are so raw. Questions like “Why God?!” and “Where are/were you?!” are so valid and so real. I wish that I had these answers… Personally I struggle in this area too you are not alone. The fear, pain, anger, confusion, frustration are all very valid emotions at times like this. If only we could channel these emotions for good or to bring about change.

*I love this quote from President Abraham Lincoln above – even he experienced times in his life where he was so overwhelmed by life and lacked wisdom on a given subject that he had no other choice but to fall to his knees in prayer.

Navigating Complex Emotions

As I’m writing this I am addressing personal emotions that I, a 34 year old mother to 4 have. Can you imagine how navigating such complex emotions can be for our children? The uneasiness we feel as parents in sending our children off to school may be greater than or less depending on the age of the child and awareness they have of the rise in school shootings. As parents we must pray daily for our children, engage with them regularly and actively involve ourselves in their lives.

The Importance of Active Parenting & Prayer

A Washington grandmother reported her grandson to authorities when she discovered extensive plans in a journal where the teen was plotting a mass school shooting and a semi-automatic rifle in his guitar case. Can you even begin to imagine how hard it was for this grandmother to call the police. God bless her for being actively engaged in her grandchild’s life. Because of her diligence she was able to help thwart a plan that was in place that could have taken many innocent lives as well as her grandchild. You can read more here.

It’s becoming increasingly more and more important to be involved in our children’s every day lives. Being steadfast in both our prayers and active parenting. Our local sheriff’s department places signs strategically around town prompting, “if you see something say something.” A parent or guardian certainly knows their child best. Being a kid these days isn’t easy. If you notice that something is just not right with your child be sure to address the concern and get help when things are outside of your understanding or control. Pray for peace, strength, wisdom and strength. Be confident that when our words fail us our tears reach Heaven.
